We need to feel safe from other people in order to form societies and prosper. Don't murder, steal, rape, etc.

If we are looking for a single thing to devote our lives to, this thing should be universally valid, understandable, natural and intuitive. Life is existence, death is at the best "uncertainty" even for religious people.
